Science Contests

University of Toronto Biology Competition

The National Biology Competition is run annually by the University of Toronto and is written by Canadian and International students. The contest is open to students of all grades but focuses on grade 11 and 12 content (great practice if you are going to be writing the AP biology exam!). It will be written online during class time and there is a nominal cost of $7 to participate. If we have enough interested participants we can run practice sessions at lunch leading up to the contest. Please review the information below and let me know if you are interested in participating.

Date: April 17, 2025

Time: 10:20 am (75 minutes)

Cost: $7

The Top 1% of students in Canadian schools and the Top 1% of students in schools outside of Canada will each receive monetary prizes (CAD) as follows:

  • 1st: $300
  • 2nd: $200
  • 3rd: $100
  • the remaining 1% (beginning with 4th place): $50 each

University of Waterloo Chemistry Contests

Chem 13 News Exam Contest

Exam date: Thursday, May 8, 2025. Order online mid-February.

The Chem 13 News Exam Contest is designed for Grade 12 high school chemistry students in their second high school chemistry course. Topics include organic chemistry, equilibria, kinetics, oxidation-reduction, bonding, structure, reactions, solutions, gases, and some probing questions beyond standard high school content.

Avogadro Exam Contest

Exam date: Thursday, May 15, 2025. Order online mid-February.

The Avogadro Exam Contest is designed for Grade 11 high school students in their first high school chemistry course. Topics include structure of matter, bonding, reactions, solutions, and gases. The test includes a few probing and demanding questions on some of the main topics of high school chemistry.

University of Waterloo Sir Isaac Newton Physics Contest

The Sir Isaac Newton (SIN) Exam is a test of high school physics and is offered by the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Waterloo to encourage the teaching of physics. The test, although challenging, is meant to be refreshing and fun. Political and other topical humour have marked SIN exams for years. Students participate from across Canada, the USA and abroad.
