School Life

Student Activity Fee: 
The Student Activity Fee is $60.00 and supports co-curricular activities at TCI. The Activity Fee entitles students to a Student ID/ Activity Card, a student planner (agenda) and a yearbook. The ID card gives students access to borrow library materials, to attend school events such as dances, and to play on teams or join clubs. It also serves as a student school ID card for identification purposes.

 

Thistletown Learns: 

On some scheduled Wednesdays, classes will be shortened for students so that teachers can work together to focus on student success. On Staff Meeting days, classes begin at 9:55 a.m. Please see the School Day Schedule in the calendar section of this agenda. 

 

Opening Exercises/National Anthem: 
Students in the halls must stand quietly during O Canada and the morning announcements.

 

Cafeteria service

Cafeteria service is available from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m. for our breakfast club and 11:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. for lunch. There is no food service during exams.

 

 Breakfast Club: 
Start the day off right with a great tasting, healthy and nutritious breakfast with our Breakfast Program every day from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m.outside of Gym A/B.

Character Education:
TCI values character development and supports a variety of initiatives to reward students who display good character traits.

Valuables: 
Students are strongly advised to leave all valuable items and large amounts of cash at home.

Scholarships: 
Many scholarships are available for students to access throughout the school year. Criteria for these scholarships include academic achievement, leadership, community service, participation in co-curricular activities, and financial need. Information about these scholarships will be announced by Student Services.

Student Services: 
The counsellors and secretary of Student Services are available to assist you and your parents regarding your present and/or future educational and career plans. As well, you will find that Thistletown' s Career Resource Centre will be your "launching pad to the future". It will provide you with the opportunity to obtain information (both electronic and print) about the steps to success, educational planning, career exploration and job seeking skills. If you have a matter of concern, Student Services counsellors will listen, help and are able to make referrals to outside agencies.

Resource Centre: 
The TCI Resource Centre is a full teaching library. Class, small group, and individual research projects are planned and completed here with the help of the librarian in conjunction with the classroom teacher. In addition to providing quiet areas for study and homework for students, the Resource Centre houses thousands of traditional and electronic resources. We have a computer lab of 30 stations. Internet access is available on all 30 computers. Books may be signed out for a two week period and may be renewed. Books may also be reserved by students. The reference collection is extensive and the vertical file collection has been kept updated. The library is open for most of the school day and teachers are available before the start of the school day and during lunch.

Computer Access: 
Need to type up a resume, class project, homework assignment ... or just finish some research for an ISU?  Computer access is available to you as follows: Monday to Friday in the Resource Centre (Library). The procedure is: you must have a valid TCI Student Card, sign in at the main desk, and indicate what you will be working on. No recreational use of the computer labs is permitted.

Co-operative Education /OYAP:
You can earn credits and gain experience in a career field in which you are interested. To enrol in the program, you, must submit an application to Student Services, undergo a screening process, and be accepted by the prospective employer. All students must complete and attend pre- employment and integration sessions. Students must have 16 or more credits in order to apply.

Braeburn Lunch and After School Tutoring: 
Thistletown is very fortunate to have FREE tutoring for students who need help completing their homework or other assignments. Braeburn Neighbourhood Place provides this great opportunity for our students every school day at lunch and from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. in Room 279 and 277. Students eat a big, free, healthy snack (vegetarian and Halal options available) and then get help with their assignments from teachers and senior TCI students. This wonderful program can accommodate up to 40 students each session on a first come first served basis. Attendance is taken daily so that parents can call the office at any time and ask if their son or daughter has taken advantage of the tutoring service. Once the “After School” tutoring is finished, students may choose to stay for free, supervised recreational activities such as ping pong, cooking, fitness and sports unti15:30 p.m. Registration forms for this amazing program are available in the Guidance Office.
