The Dance program at Westview focuses on developing knowledge, skills and the artistry of a variety of styles. Students learn cultural dances such as Afro-Caribbean and Latin dance, current styles of Hip Hop and Jazz Funk, as well as formal techniques such as those seen in Jazz, Ballet and Contemporary dance. Through the exploration of these various styles, students develop a much better grasp of movement and dance as a form of expression. They learn that their stories can be told through dance. Opportunities to explore personal movement style and develop meaningful choreography is at the core of every dance class.
The history of dance performance at Westview is a rich one. Our dancers have performed in a variety of venues from the Hart House Theatre, Toronto Centre for the Arts, Burton Auditorium to our very own Westview stage. Our dancers have won TDSB’s Dare 2 Dance in competition with all other TDSB twice, received several choreography and performance awards such as Best of the Festival at Kiwanis Dance Festival over, choreography awards from Kiwanis, Kick It Up Dance Competition, and Dancers for Cancer. In each of these dances, competitions, and performances the common driving force is the expression of student voice through movement.
