Downsview’s MST Leadership Academy offers a unique opportunity for all students to develop their talents, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in a series of specialized Mathematics, Science, and Technology courses. University, College, and Workplace pathways are supported.


Student Leaders apply to enter our program in grade 9.  Our program focuses on the following areas: academics; project-based learning; career readiness; strong industry partnerships. 


Downsview’s MST Leadership Academy supports student leaders to become powerful agents of change with strong technical and collaborative capabilities. All student leaders in our MST Leadership Academy complete a program which includes a selection of academic course choices in grades 9 through 12, across five specialized areas: Mathematics; Science; Technology and Design; Business Leadership and Computer Studies; Equity and Wellbeing.


MST Student Leaders build the knowledge and confidence to meet the challenges of our 21st Century digital world. Our graduates pursue post-secondary pathways to careers in engineering, medicine, environmental sciences, graphic design, and more.


Downsview’s MST graduates are fully equipped to meet the challenges of our global economy! 




Program Outline


GRADE 9: Three Required Courses

Courses

Career-readiness Skills 

MTH1W1: Math

  • Number sense, algebra, geometry

SNC1W1: Science

  • Researching, evaluating, and analyzing data
  • Science methods and safety protocols, project-based learning

TIJ1O1: Exploring Technologies

  • Working with a variety of tools, equipment, and software for industry readiness

GRADE 10: Two Required Courses

Courses

Career-readiness Skills

SNC2D1: Science

  • Laboratory skills: microscopes, pipetting, volumetrics, titration, project-based learning

Either

ICD 2O1: Digital Technology and Innovations in the Changing World

OR

TDJ 201: Technological Design

  • Planning and designing computer programs, learning hardware/software configurations, safe computing practices and social/ethical issues

  • Researching, building, designing, and assessing  solutions for technology projects  
  • Strengthening awareness of environment, societal and cultural issues in design

GRADE 11 & 12: Two Required Courses and 2 MST related courses

Grade 11 Math and one of the following three options:

Equity and Wellbeing Course Requirement (Select 1)

  • IDC4U1: Africentric Leadership Course
  • PLF4M1: Recreation Leadership Course
  • CGW4U1: World Issues - A Geographic Analysis

Grade 11 & 12: Select any TWO courses from TWO different areas

Course Choices

Science:

  • Any Grade 11 or Grade 12 Science Offering

Technology and Design:

  • TCJ3/4C1: Construction Engineering Technology for College 
  • TDJ3/4M1: Technological Design for University or College
  • TXA3E1 or TXJ3E1:  Aesthetics for Industry and Workplace

Business Leadership and Computer Studies: 

  • Grade 11 or 12 Computer Science 
  • BDI3C1: Entrepreneurship for College
  • BOH4M1: International Business  for University and College
  • MST Related Co-op Placement:  Hands-on learning in the workplace                  (counts as 2 credits)
